Personal experiences...

have been reading so much on this site...it is not even funny anymore.

i am now into "the best of"...a gold mine of personal experiences!

while reading, a question often comes to mind.

In my case it was freedom from the Witlesses that allowed me, for the first time in my life, to actually begin to study the Bible in an objective manner. That study has destroyed my faith in the Bible as being anything more than the writings of men trying to explain things that everyone wondered about, but couldn't explain.

I'm speaking for myself, of course, and I mean no disrespect to those of you who still believe in the Bible.

Let me put it this way Black Swan...

Iron Rod responds, "Uh...well actually Jehovah, now that you mention it, yes you could make it much clearer. Like how this book, supposedly inspired by you; the Supreme Being, perfect and omnipotent, contains so many contradictions, redactions, and outright absurdities. How is it that your book, that is supposed to be the one source of communication from yourself to mankind, is preserved in a hodge-podge bunch of weathered manuscripts containing more than 200,000 variations? How is it that, since you supposedly chose to confuse human languages a few thousand years ago, making the translation of this all important book into the various languages extremely difficult, you expect us to see clearly what you want of us? I'm sorry Jehovah, but I just can't help but think that the Creator of the universe, humans, and language could have made it a hell of a lot clearer."

Let me say again, it truly is not my intention to offend anyone. These are just the thoughts that I am having now.

at sauls request she summons the spirit of samuel.. in the notwelltranslated, the name samuel is written in quotation marks like this..."samuel.

One time, the Watchtower reader stumbled clumsily over the name of a French newspaper quoted in the Watchtower. He then, obviously without thinking, said: "Pardon my French." Big laughs....

On another occasion, the bookstudy reader was reading out of the Creator book ( or maybe the Evolution book....oh well ) and instead of reading "one celled organism " read " one celled orgasm." Much stifled laughter there...

Still another time, an Elders son, commenting on the wisdom of doing things Jehovahs way and waiting for the new system uttered a gem. He said,"Instead of getting involved in things like immorality and losing Jehovahs favor, we should wait for the new system, when we can have sex all the time." Needless to say, everyone got a kick out of that one, especially his father, who was conducting the part at the time.

I have a question....

This question is open to everyone, but as you will see, input from JWD's resident scholars ( like Narkissos and Leolaia ) will be essential.

In the account found in 1 Samuel chapter 28, we read about Sauls infamous visit to the spirit medium of En-Dor. At Sauls request she summons the spirit of Samuel.

In the NotWellTranslated, the name Samuel is written in quotation marks like this..."Samuel." This, of course, gives the reader the impression that this is not really Samuel. ( And in keeping with Watchtower doctrine, must be a demon posing as Samuel ) So far, I have checked 10 other translations and none of them have the quotation marks.

So here is my question: Is there anything in the oldest manuscripts, whether the Hebrew words used or sentence structure,etc. to justify the use of these quotation marks? Anything to indicate that the writer wanted the reader to know that this wasn't Samuel, but rather, a demon posing as Samuel? Obviously, thats the impression put forth by the use of these marks.

I'm thinking that since these marks are not found in at least the 10 other translations that I checked, that this is just one more example of the Society tweaking their Bible to fit their doctrine, instead of tweaking their doctrine to fit the Bible.

Any thoughts?

SixofNine....I want to thank you so much for your wonderfully condescending denigration of my intellect. Its good to know that on JWD we can talk to each other with respect. Do you always respond this way when you hear an opinion you don't agree with? I'll bet that you're fun to live with. Its okay though. I personally have been married to a (literal) psychopath for twenty years, so I'm accustomed to personal attacks. At least you didn't try to stab me with a kitchen knife or run over me with my own car...

I would have thought that anyone reading my previous post would have picked up on the over-the-top -tongue-in-cheek political satire that I was trying to convey. Obviously not. Okay...since you are so determined to take it so seriously...I'll step out of satire mode long enough to say just a couple of things.

You were unhappy with my inference that Great Britain and Canada had inefficient health care systems. I could ask you how you know any different, since you don't live in either country, but I won't. I could refer you to the news reports that I have seen wherein British citizens were complaining about their system. They don't like being on a three month waiting list for simple medical procedures. Hmmm. Of course you would no doubt dismiss these reports as "right wing propaganda." You would then, of course point to reports (such as you have already posted) that show the opposite point of view as being "reliable." I, therefore, see no point in playing that game of verbal ping pong. Rather, I would appeal to your common sense. Do you not see that combining the word "government" with the word "efficiency" results in a huge oxymoron? Does it make sense to make a trip to the Doctor's office not unlike a trip to the License Branch? And really,"Hillary has proposed no such thing?".....Has not nationalized health care been her signature issue for at least fiteen years?

Lets cut to the chase. I supect that the motivation behind your personal jabs at me stems from the fact that I didn't aim my satire at any Republicans, correct? Well, I aim to please, so here you go....
